Voltra - Electrifying the bus network

In 2020, Go North East invested £3.7 million in the first fully electric zero emission bus fleet, which were partly funded by the Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme (ULEBS).

The game-changing Voltra buses are powered by electricity that’s sourced from zero-emission supplies such as solar, wind and hydro supporting the company’s commitment to improve air quality.

The vehicles operate the services 53 and 54 between Newcastle, Gateshead, Bensham and Saltwell Park. In September 2022, the operator invested in a further nine Voltra buses which entered operation covering the Q3 route from Great Park to Wallsend via Newcastle City Centre & Quayside.  The continued investment in electric vehicles reflects the company’s commitment towards having a ‘net zero’ bus fleet by 2035.

The fleet of 18 vehicles are capable of an all-day service from the power of one overnight charge. Alongside this investment in new vehicles, Go North East has also built a new electric bus depot, The Riverside depot in Gateshead, capable of accommodating up to 30 electric buses.

The buses are charged overnight and feature air conditioning, USB charging and free wi-fi which is further welcome news for passengers.
